Meet the Artist

Crystal M. is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores perspective, memory, and emotion through painting, photography, and digital illustration. Working under the pseudonym Crispectiveart, she is drawn to the idea that every story, feeling, and moment can be seen from more than one angle—a philosophy reflected in both her artistic practice and the name itself.

Her fascination with perspective began in a black-and-white film photography class she enrolled in while in college. Through that course, she she learned to observe the world with patience and curiosity. Inspired by photographers such as Kevin Carter and Steve McCurry, she became fascinated by photography's ability to reveal stories that often go unnoticed. After the course, she experimented with street photography but quickly realized that her temperament was at odds with the invasiveness she felt the genre sometimes required. While she admired its honesty, she struggled with the idea of inserting herself into strangers' intimate moments.

Seeking a different way to create, she turned to digital illustration. There, she found freedom in experimentation and comfort in the possibility of mistakes. The digital canvas became a safe space to learn, practice, and develop the fundamentals of drawing and visual storytelling.

In the summer of 2021, after relocating to Accra, Ghana, Crystal found herself immersed in the warmth and familiarity of her childhood home while pursuing her legal education. Surrounded by memories, family, and a renewed sense of belonging, she picked up a paintbrush for the first time. Without formal instruction, structure, or a clear plan, she created her first acrylic painting guided entirely by feeling. What began as an instinctive act of expression soon evolved into a dedicated practice.

Today, Crystal's work draws from nostalgia, joy, community, sisterhood, and visions of the world she longs to see. Through surreal and emotionally rich compositions, she invites viewers to pause, look again, and consider what may exist beyond the obvious. Through Crispectiveart, she is not only creating art but also re-learning herself by using creativity as a tool for healing, self-discovery, and growth.

At its heart, Crispectiveart is an act of nurturing: a practice of holding space for her inner child and, in doing so, creating space for others to reconnect with theirs.
